. you're watching the station that works for you. now, good morning maryland. >> good-bye p 2012 and hello, 2013. many range in the new year in style in maryland and arnold the world. we will bring you a recap of the big night and with the new year new laws. one of the biggest, same sex marriage. we are live this morning after early morning nuptials were hand out and while you slept the senate passed a vote to avoid the fiscal cliff. now will the house follow suit? the skies over baltimore lit up as crowds welcomed in 2013.

right now. that will be the deal for most of the afternoon. 36 degrees around 8:00. 40 around lunchtime and mostly cloudy skies this afternoon with temperatures taking us up from 41 at 2 into the low 40s around 4:00. we will talk more about the weather and the seven-day forecast which has quite bitter blast. temperatures that can struggling to get out of the 30s coming up in bit. 4:32. we have breaking news involving the fiscal cliff. just after midnight, the u.s. senate celebrated the new year by-passing a bill to avoid the cliff. and today, the house will take the vote sometime around noon. the sense in dc is most of the worst is now behind us. abc has latest from the nation's capital. >> reporter: as americans range in the new year the senate was in session in the middle of the night passing a bill after the

fiscal cliff deadline went by. >> we have done some good for the country. >> reporter: since lawmakers missed the midnight deadline nearly every american wakes with up higher taxes. but congress can undo those tax hikes if the house passes the senate's bill. vice president biden who was instrumental in brokering the deal told reporters he is hopeful it gets through the house but you never know. >> you shouldn't predict how the senate will vote before they vote and number two you surely can't predict how house is going to vote. >> reporter: the bill would extend tax couples for those earning under 400,000 dollars and prevent a big tax hike in a state valued at less than 5 million dollars and extend unemployment benefits for 2 million people. house will take up the bill and the hope is they can pass it before the economy is rocked by the tax hikes. >> i feel very, very good>> reporter: president obama called the vote the right thing to do for the country and

encouraged the house to pass the bill right away. abc news, washington. medicare reimbursement could take a hit if the fiscal cliff is not averted. reimbursements to doctors will be cut by nearly 30% beginning today because congress may have failed to make the adjustments for medicare payments. it could mean more doctors refewing to treat medicare patients. 2013 will be remembered as landmark year for same sex couples and many couldn't wait to get to city hall at the stroke of midnight. today is a big day as same sex marriage can officially happen in the state. sherrie johnson is live downtown where couples were lined up to say their i dos it was a big morning for many. >> reporter: that's right. a little after midnight 7 same sex couples gathered right here in downtown baltimore at city hall to say their eye dos. this is definitely a historic day for maryland. the couples waited patiently at

city hall to say their vows. baltimore mayor stephanie rawlings-blake hosted some of the marriages for same sex couples and perform the first ceremony. couples brought friends and family to take part in the historic ceremony. new year's day has a new meaning for many couples who can have the right to marry the person they love. same sex couples were able to get a license in december and today they were able to legally marry with the new law. new year's day marks the culmination of new year by legislators and voters to be persuaded to support full marriage rights for same sex couples. >> for jim and i, it means we can protect ourselves as far as our state property, you know and this is a big stef. step but we will never be equal until the federal government makes it equal for everybody. and there's a lot of other states in the united states who

have not embraced equality marriage yet so we have a long way to go. >> reporter: the first ceremony took place at 12:30 this morning. what a way to ring in the new year. reporting live at city hall, sherrie johnson, abc2 news. 216, that's the official number for murders in baltimore city for 2012. last night, mourners held avigil to remember them all. victims families and politician and faith community leaders stood together. homicides are up even another other crimes are down. >> the people we lost to violence on the streets, our sons and daughters and brothers and sisters mother and fathers the loss is tragic to their families and to the city. >> this is the 4th year victims families gathered in the city to remember the dead. two teens have been arrested and charged with beating another man. police say terrance green and

news around the nation this morning. the man who was pushed in front a of a subway train if new york was laid to rest. family and friends remembered him as a smart, kind and hard workingman. he was killed when police say

erica menendez pushed him on the tracks because of his ethnicity. she is currently undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. a georgia woman is facing charges after hitting a teen with her suv over a wal-mart parking space. angela was arrested after police say she got into an argument with a 17-year-old girl who was saving that space for a friend. cornet claims she told the teen to move as she pulled into the space and the girl leaned against the suv and began yelling. but police has video from the security cameras showing cornet striking the girl with the suv and the teen was not seriously hurt and cornet is charged with a misdemeanor in the crime. in sacramento, shots range out during the new year's eve celebration and two people were killed and three others hurt. police say an estimated 40,000 people gathered for a fireworks show when the gunfire erupted. the midnight celebration was immediately canceled and police are looking for the suspect. and in florida a robbery

out of a movie in the high priced heist caught on camera. the thieves broke into a fortlauderdale jewelry store through the roof address -- dressed in white with face and hands covered. look at this video. they used cutting tore touches get through three torches to get through three -- torches to get through three safes. a company is keeping a oil drilling rig. crews used two tugboats to secure towing lines to the rig. to make matters worse, they battled waves and wind gusts around 60 miles an hour and it's not hurricane force. those winds and waves are tough out there. >> those pacific storms mean business coming through. they can get 70, 80 miles an hour. >> if you you've seen the show the deadliest catch that's what they are dealing with. >> that's it and that's storm season over the gulf of alaska.

quinn hoover died in march and the 17-year-old's family donated his organs. the float called journeys of the heart features a picture of hoover made out of plant material. and as the ravens prepare for the playoff game sunday, you can get ready to see a lot of purple. grouped crews will be throughout the city, city hall and federal hill painting the logos on the grass at each location. ravens cheerleaders and the team mascot will be joining in the fun providing give away for fans. komen maryland says the 1 million dollar short of reaching the fund raising goal a spokesperson says it could mean caners patients and survivors in the state could lose services like prepared meals, breast exaand some form of therapy. they will decide which grants they can afford to award for 2013. hundreds of thousands of workers will see a boost for pay in the new year. rhode island workers will see the biggest paycheck increase.

people all around the world took time in to ring in 2013. this is london. fireworks lit up the sky as the brits welcomed in the new year. london eye played center stage at celebrations alongside big ben. fireworks exploded over the castle welcoming in the new year. at the vatican the pope celebrated with a service at the basilica and gave thanks for 2012 and a look ahead to 2013. the pope marked the end of the year by saying despite all the death and injustice in the world goodness prevails. and in amsterdam the celebration was as big. partiers were all over the public square welcoming in 2013 with family and friends. now, there may not be a crystal ball as in new york but the main square is a scene for an all out street party complete with fireworks and live music mike masco i got to ask is that not a place you would want to celebrate at least one new year. >> i tell you that's -- look at

note. clouds hanging tough this afternoon and here's cold air that will pour in over the great -- over the great lakes and into our area as we go into the next 24 hours. so today, lots of clouds. like we were yesterday. 36 at the 8:00 hour. 40 around lunchtime and again mainly cloudy skies through the20:00 hour. 35 goes to 43 -- 2:00 hour. 35 goes to 43. there are pre-- there is precip work towards the south and west. but our atmosphere on topmaryland is dry. anything that tries to work over the mountains is not going to happen. that system will be down towards the south and behind it, not much of anything going on. this is cold air out over des moines and parts of minnesota. that's what's funneling in on the backside of the lake- effect. look at the temperatures 46 in rue lee right now. 2 -- raleigh right now. 2 below in canada and international falls. you love that spot international falls. >> i winter there. >> it's beautiful.

14 below zero right now. not feeling too beautiful. more coming up. >> i got a pickle lake. >> pickle lake. >> yeah. secretary of state hillary clinton is hospitalized with a potentially serious blood clot. her doctors revealed exactly where it was located. here's the details. >> reporter: we have details about what precisely happened to secretary of state clinton. the specific blood clot as well. the clot we are talking about it was unclear where it was located previously but whoa know it's in a -- we know it's in a blood vessel located near the brain but not on the brain but it drains blood away from the brain. it's called a cerebral brain. in secretary clinton's case it's on the right side of the head the right side here. i will so you the left side for the sake of demonstration here.

if i remove the hemisphere of the brain, you can see where the veins are. see the blue area right in there, that's the area that is draining blood away from the brain and one of the veins in this area is where that clot actually has occurred. most likely due to a combination of the head trauma she what few weeks ago and in addition to the fact she is had a problem with blood clots in the past dating back to 1998. we are hearing from her doctors who says she is on blood thinners and is is awake and talking and most importantly there's no evidence of stroke or neurological damage. my guess is they will continue to monitor her for another couple days in the hospital and probably get another scan at some point to make sure that clot is dissolved as result of the blood thinner medications. as we get more details we will bring them to you. back to you for now. >> clinton was scheduled to return to work this week after a stomach virus and concussion sidelined her for next month.
